Cannabinoids and antioxidants — what’s the connection?

  • Copied!

The term ‘antioxidants’ has been commonplace in the beauty and wellness space for years now — but why?

The easiest explanation is that antioxidants can help prevent or delay some types of cell damage, which can cause fine lines, wrinkles, uneven skin tone, and other unpopular skincare issues. Antioxidants can also prevent and protect our cells from free radicals, which prematurely age and break down skin.

Harmful free radicals can be found in external things like tobacco, air pollution, and radiation. Whereas other free radicals are produced naturally by our bodies during regular activities like exercise and digestion. A certain level of free radicals is positive, even helping our bodies fight against infection.

However, problems arise when the body’s levels of free radicals become too high. This phenomenon is known as oxidative stress and has the potential to cause considerable cell damage. Antioxidants have been shown to counteract oxidative stress and treat cell damage — which in beauty terms, translates to: antioxidants have properties that prevent ageing.

Cannabinoids like CBD and CBG have been shown to possess potent antioxidant properties. Similar to naturally occurring antioxidants like selenium, vitamin E and vitamin C, daily use can prevent signs of ageing by protecting our skin against the damaging effects of free radicals, resulting in a more youthful looking complexion.

With its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties, cannabinoids are a powerful multi-tasking ingredient worth incorporating in your daily skincare regimen.
