Cannabinoids are a group of molecules that interact with the human body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS). Cannabinoids can be classified as endogenous (produced naturally by the body) or exogenous (not produced by the body).

Cannabinoids act on a range of receptors within the human body that are involved in regulating various physiological functions related to sleep, pain, memory, mood, appetite and immune function. Additionally, certain cannabinoids like CBG and CBD possess antioxidant, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.

Examples of endogenous cannabinoids include anandamide (AEA) and 2-Arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG), while examples of exogenous cannabinoids include cannabidiol (CBD) and cannabigerol (CBG), which are produced predominantly by hemp and cannabis plants belonging to the species Cannabis sativa L.

These exogenous cannabinoids are sometimes referred to as phytocannabinoids since they are produced by plants. However, thanks to science these same cannabinoids can now be produced by yeast, algae, and bacteria using a process known as biosynthesis.

Cannabinoids are reportedly being used for a variety of reasons related to health and wellness. While there are only a few approved pharmaceutical drugs that contain cannabinoids, consumers are turning to cannabinoids like CBD to help with their sleep, mood, pain, and inflammation. Certain cannabinoids like CBD and CBG also provide antioxidant, anti-bacterial, and anti-inflammatory effects, which have massive potential for optimizing skin health.

Cannabinoids have made their way into a variety of consumer and medicinal products. Traditionally, cannabinoids were consumed by smoking dried flower from the plant species Cannabis sativa L. Given the health risks associated with smoking, ingestible and topical products such as edibles, beverages, softgels, and creams formulated with cannabinoid-rich extracts have gained more traction.

Biosynthesis is also being used to sustainably produce cannabinoids that are identical to those found in nature and do not contain many of residual solvents, environmental pathogens, heavy metals, and other unwanted compounds like THC that are commonly found in plant-extracts. Thanks to biosynthesis, consumers can have faith that their cannabinoid products are safe, compliant, and of the highest quality possible.

At the time of writing, in the UK cosmetic products containing Cannabis-derived ingredients, i.e., Cannabis sativa seed oil, full spectrum extracts or isolated cannabinoids (e.g., CBD, CBG) are currently controlled as per the same guidelines as the EU cosmetics regulation 1223/2009, whereby they are permitted for use in cosmetics as long as they are in accordance with the 1961 United Nations Single Convention on Narcotics. The EU regulation states that Cannabis ingredients shall be prohibited from use in cosmetic products if they are prepared as an extract, tincture, or resin of Cannabis in accordance with the Single Convention (which is one reason why Cellular Goods has opted to work with biosynthetic cannabinoid isolates). If the Cannabis-derived ingredients are sourced from exempted strains (with low THC), the seeds, leaves etc. are permitted for use.

Testing is an integral part of our development process. We work closely with our ingredient suppliers, manufacturing partners, and accredited third-party labs to ensure that our products are formulated with the best ingredients possible and tested to the highest standards. Our development process includes stability testing at different temperatures to ensure the shelf-life of our products. We also conduct packaging compatibility assessments to validate that our packaging solutions are effective in maintaining the integrity of our products and functional in administering them for use.

Since the existing data on cannabinoids can only answer some of the questions we have about how these molecules work, we engage in a series of pre- and post-development studies to assess the safety and efficacy of our products. This includes testing to ensure that our products do not irritate or sensitize skin, and that our products succeed at delivering the benefits they are designed to provide. We do not conduct animal testing with our products, and try to make environmentally-conscious packaging decisions.

A Certificate of Conformance (or CoC) confirms that our products are produced according to applicable industry standards and regulations. They provide a transparent overview of our product specifications, testing requirements, and quality standards. By testing each batch of product at accredited industry-leading laboratories, we are able to demonstrate to our consumers that our products are consistently safe, compliant, and the highest quality possible.

Our products are designed to play well with others, meaning that they can be incorporated into a skincare routine that contains other products. The skin-soothing benefits of CBG can complement a routine that includes potentially irritating active ingredients. We recommend applying products in your usual order, with our Serum applied before our Day or Night Cream, and the Face Oil applied as the last step in your routine. Our After Shaving Moisturiser can be applied after shaving or post-grooming.

Our skincare products have been tested under dermatologist supervision and are proven to be suitable for sensitive skin. That said, everyone’s skin is different and we recommend patch testing any new product for individuals with reactive or sensitive skin.

We do not test any of our products on animals. We use alternative and approved animal-free methods for evaluating the safety and efficacy of our products.

The possibilities of cannabinoids for skin health are immense. Cannabinoids can address a range of skincare concerns thanks to their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.

Cannabinoids are finicky compounds that don’t like light, heat or oxygen. Even though we’ve taken extra precautions by using glass or airless packaging for our products, we recommend storing your cannabinoid skincare solutions at room temperature and away from direct sunlight.
